As the children continue to explore and celebrate their rich diversity, they heard several books, including Two Eyes, A Nose and a Mouth, which celebrates the uniqueness and similarities among all of us. After hearing Frida, a story about the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, the children were inspired to draw self-portraits. In this process, they used black sharpies to focus on detail and small mirrors to carefully examine their facial features before beginning to draw. The children are gaining a clearer understanding of what it means to be an author and illustrator. In the process of planning what to write about during writing workshop, they are learning that the best stories come from many personal experiences.
