This week, math activities focused on finding shapes in the environment. The children listened to several books about shapes including When a Line Bends a Shape Begins by Rhonda Greene and The Wing on a Flea, by Ed Emberley. As a result, the children began to notice geometric shapes embedded in the structural form of many things in their environment. After extensive exploration, brainstorming and planning, the children created shape collages. By engaging in a guessing game in which shape attributes were given as clues, the children were able to distinguish from and compare the shapes to one another. While blindfolded, each child chose shapes from a bag and used his or her sense of touch to identify the shapes as well as describe their attributes.
